As usual, Jerry Rice did exactly what was needed to win the game. He also got exactly what he needed
to become the first player with 1,000 career receptions Sunday night, November 3, 1996, in New Orleans. Rice caught a 36-yard touchdown pass, set up another
San Francisco TD with his milestone catch and recovered an onside kick that sealed a 24-17 victory over the New Orleans
Saints. Jerry entered the game three catches shy of his 1,000th catch, made the milestone reception when
he grabbed a 9-yard pass from Steve Young with 11:47 left. The officials at first signaled touchdown when Rice caught the
ball. It would have been his second of the night, but the ball was marked at the 2-yard line. Young sneaked in on the next
play to put the 49ers (7-2) up 24-14 with 11:31 remaining.
