Nike P.L.A.Y. Program

In October of 1994, Jerry participated in a joint promotion with Nike relative to their P.L.A.Y. Program. P.L.A.Y. (participate in the lives of America's youth) is a national movement started by Nike to increase the availability of quality, safe recreational facilities, and programs for youths across the country. A core component of P.L.A.Y. is Nike and Footlocker's reuse-a-shoe program, which takes old Nike shoes and re-constructs them into court or playground surfaces. Last May, Footlockers in the Bay Area collected used Nike shoes which were then ground up and recycled into cushioned safety mats for fall protection.

In October of 1995, Jerry made an appearance at the Hawthorne Elementary School in Oakland upon the re-opening of the playground. "Education is important," Jerry told a crowd of more than 1,000 enthusiastic students. "If you're not successful in sports, you can have something to fall back on."

Team-Up for Health Kids

In September of 1994, Jerry Rice, The San Francisco Forty Niners Community Foundation, SEGA Foundation, The United Way, and KTVU established a community partnership titled "Team-Up for Healthy Kids". The $25,000 Challenge grant which the SEGA Foundation provided matched the first $25,000 in contributions dollar for dollar. 100% of the funds supported health-care services for children throughout five county hospitals which include: Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and San Francisco. Individuals were asked to make a one-time donation of either $5.00 - $48.00, $49.00, or $80.00. In turn, all donors received a limited edition photo of Jerry Rice's 127th record-breaking touchdown. For those pledging $80.00, Jerry personally signed the photo.

The program raised $50,000 that went directly into five county hospitals in the community.
