The NFL Quarterback Club would like tothank NFL fans for tuning in here on the Internet. Please join us againnext Tuesday evening for Cyberspace Showdown III when Drew Bledsoe meets Jim Kelly. Cyberspace Showdown II has been produced by the NFLQuarterback Club and Team NFL.Good night.
I hope you have a good football game Dan... but not too good.
Your thoughts, Jerry?
I've always respected him as aplayer, and I'm looking forward to playing against himon Monday night. In fact,Jerry, if you feel like staying in San Francisco and taking a night off, well that's all right with me.
Dan. Final thoughts. Anypersonal message for Jerry?
The Monday night game should be a very explosive game.Dan Marino and the Dolphins have so much talent, I'm sure they are going to throw the ball at every down. What the 49ers haveto do is be very aggressive and put the points on theboard. It's going to be a high scoring game and a game that the world is going to enjoy.
Hopefully, we'll play a good football game and win. That'smy expectation every time we go out.
Jerry and Dan: please share your expectations for Monday night's game?
The most important thing aboutbreaking that December 6 record against Miami is that so many guys put me in that position that it would have been cheating them not to break the record. So Iwas very fortunate... notsaying anything negative aboutMiami, but they were next in line and I was lucky to get it done.
I knew that. I was there.
Did you know: This will be only the eighth meeting between the 49ers and the Dolphins. The series began in1973, with Miami holding a 4-3advantage. Did you know: In their last meeting (December 6, 1992) Jerry Rice set the NFL record for career touchdown catches as the 49ersdefeated the Dolphins 27-3.
The only regret about playing on Monday night is that it gives you a couple of extra days of practice! But the exciting part is thatyou know the entire world is watching and you want to go out there and give it your best.
Things are more difficult for the next week, cause it is a short week. It's nothing but fun playing on Mondays, plus you have the extra day toprepare. But game day is a big difference, because usually you have a 1 PM game, but Mondays you have to wait around all day until game time.
Dan and Jerry. How does playing on Monday night affectyour preparations for tonight's game and the short week next week?
We have to be a little more patient with Elvis, can't givehim too much. He has to feel really comfortable. WithSteve, he's been playing for a long, long time, hehas the experience so you can throw more at Steve Young. Steve is out for 4 to 5 weeks, hopefully he can get healthy and regain his spot. Butright now, Elvis is the quarterback and we have to get out there and make the plays and build confidencein him.
Jerry, how does the passing differ with Grbac? Any update on Steve Young?
I definitely realize the records - we were supposed to roll through the "easy" part of our schedule, but we haven't done that. So to reach the goals we set for ourselves at the beginning of the season, we'd still like togo undefeated through the restof our season.
Dan, are you mindful of the strength of your final six opponents? All have .500 records or better.
I don't think we're going to change anything. We're going to run the football, throw the football, and hopefully have some success doing both because you need that balance of throwing and running.
A question for Jerry. Does facing the AFC's #2 rushing defense put any more pressure on your passing game?
For us, we have to concentrateon our execution. Playing theNiners, you can't make mistakes - try to control the ball and keep it away from their offense. With weapons like Jerry, Brent Jones, and all the rest, the only adjustments we'll make isto try to keep it away from them.
Dan, have you made any adjustments for the Niners' NFL-best rushing defense?
Maybe we can trade off and he can send me the offensive scheme! I know what they are going to do, they're going to throw theball 90% of the time.
My question would be - could you please send me the Niners defensive scheme?
Next question, guys. If you could ask your opponent one question about this week's game and they had to answer it, what would it be?
To be honest, I'm so focused on what I have to do thatI can't think about what the other receivers are doing. As a wide receiver, you have to be focused on the defense and what they're doingto you. That's what it takes to compete.
If we lose, yeah! You do notice if a guy is having a real good game, but you'rereally just trying to concentrate on the game and doyour job and help your team win.
Given the talent you play against, are you mindful of your counterpart's performance? Dan?
My favorite team when I was kid was the Dallas Cowboys! because of Roger Staubach, Drew Pearson, and Tony Hill I was not a fanof the Dolphins but I remember watching Bob Griese throw the football and he was very talented.
Jerry?
To be honest, I grew up in Pittsburgh in the seventies - 4 Super Bowls, best team in the league. I've always been a Steeler fan. But I'm not a Steeler fan anymore...
A question for both Dan and Jerry about the game. What were your favorite teams growing up and did you have any kind of passion for your upcoming opponent? Dan?
Not very difficult for me to get comfortable with a right-handed quarterback The toughest thing for me was to get adjusted to a left handed quarterback... theball had a different spin on it, a different rotation, looked weird for the first time seeing this guy throw a football because I hadnever caught a ball froma left handed quarterback.
A question from Voyager. Jerry, what type of adjustments do you have to make with a right-handed QB inthere now?
What can I say? I remember seeing the movie... Dan is not only a great football player but he's a great actor. After his professional football career is over, he can go into acting. He'sstill breaking records right now, doesn't look to me like he's slowing down.
I had a great time - I worked 12 days with him on the movie. He was very funny, crazy, nuts- if only he wasn't acting. I do have a new respect for their profession after seeing the patience theymust have and the hours they have to put in. I was really disappointed he didn't ask me to do Ace II, though, especially after I made him a star!
A question from Al. Dan, how did you like working with Jim Carrey? PS We are driving down from Virginia to see your game Monday night. Good luck!
The best way for fans to let William know he's missed is towrite him and let him know he's missed, and to be very positive. Tell him to keep his head up.
A question from Billi Jo. Jerry--What's the best way for fans to let William Floyd know how much we miss him and that we wish him nothing but the best?
I think records are meant to be broken. You have so many talented receivers out there, like Michael Irvin,Andre Rison, Chris Carter, so if anyone should break my records, I'll be the first oneto congratulate that individual.
As far as the yardage record is concerned, I think several guys have a chance if they continue to play - maybe John Elway if something were to happen to me and he continued to play. The touchdown record, though, I think would be harder for someone to break.
For Dan, can any of today's QBs approach your records?
I try to lead by example, the way I practice is always getting 100% there on thefield. You practice the way you play -- you can't just mess around all week longand play well on Sundays. The younger guys like to look toward the veterans for an example so I like to showthem that you don't care what your records are, you have to practice hard to be successful.
Jerry, what kind of role are you playing in the developmentof J.J. Stokes and the other Niner receivers?
I would expect the Dolphins todraft a QB if there is one in the draft who they feel can help the team win, either now or in the future. I have no problem helping to develop a young QB, but I think I'd have a problem being a backup to a young guy.
Dan, do you expect the Dolphins to draft a young quarterback for you to help develop?
LOL.. Are you serious? Ifeel I'm in the best shape of my life. I'm 33, I feel more explosive now than when Icame in at 23. The type of diet I like is lots of pasta, fish, baked foods, and I try to drink a lot of water.
A fan wants to know, are you in the best shape of your career and what kind of diet do you have?
Couple different things: I tried to help Bernie and theoffense as best I could to prepare for the game. During the game, I helped Bernie by viewing the coverages and checking the flow of the game, similar to what he does for me in the backup's role.
Dan, what kind of role did youplay when injured?
Basically, we aren't going to change our game plan. We're just going to go in there -- and if Miami is willing to throw to the backs, the 49 ers need to makevery precise tackles and make sure they don't get extrayardage.
For Jerry. Any different passing strategy for the Niners this year?
The stats show that I have been, but it's not any different than past years. We're throwing the ball less than we have in past years, so that's why the receivers numbers are down.
A question for Dan. Have you thrown more to your backs thanin past seasons?
It's very difficult, takes lots of practice and communication. You just have to get a feel for each other and develop some kind of relationship.
I think it's not as tough as people may think because backups work with the receivers on a daily basis. It all depends on the opponent and what they dobest as far as how teams prepare.
A question for both of you - how tough is it for receivers to get in sync with backup QBs and how do teams plan for this?
The AFC East is extremely competitive considering everyone's knocking everyone else off - we have losses to NE, the Jets, the Colts. It's always been competitive and I think it's one of the better divisions in the league.
I don't think it has taken me by surprise. But when you look at it, teams are so much more competitive now, more talent now, especiallythe smaller teams like the Saints, the Falcons, those guys are going to make you work harder and be more competitive.
A question for Jerry and Dan, Jerry first. The NFC Central has always been known as the Black and Blue division. Has the competitiveness of your own divisions taken you by surprise this year?
The injury did disrupt my season and it was a problem, and I'd like to say if I was playing those two games, we'd have won them both. I have high expectations, so I'dhave to say we're disappointed with the fact that we're6-4.
Dan: An injury disrupted your season earlier this year. Giveus an assessment of the Dolphins' season-to-date.
I try not to think about the records. I just go out and play football. I just try and stay focused.
Jerry, You have also been re-writing the record books. Is it something you're conscious of when you're playing?
There has been a lot of talk about it, and I realize the league wants to stop the game when the records happen, so there is a certain level of anticipation, but I'm just gonna try and concentrateon the job at hand and help the team win.
Dan, Congratulations on setting theall-time NFL record for passing yardage. How do you stay focused when there is so much talk and hype aboutall the records?
The 49rers and the Cowboys don't like each other. It started a long time ago when Dwight Clark made the catch that put the 49 ers made the Super Bowl...every since then, we have had this rivalryand we don't like each other.
Jerry, Cowboys - Niners games are quickly becoming legendary. Is there any special focus on this matchup and describe the team's feelings after this past weekend's victory.
